Acrow On ‘Home Ground’

Acrow Galvanizing Ltd was on ‘home ground’ when it was asked to galvanize hand-rails, balustrades, railings and other steelwork for a new football stand. The team in question was the Saffron Walden company’s local side, Saffron Walden Town FC.

And Acrow went even further to support its neighbourhood Ridgeons League Division 1 club, by sponsoring two of the seats in the brand new 120-seater stand.

Paul Daw, of steel fabrications specialists, Keith Collier Engineering – based at Over, near Cambridge – said the project was a remarkable achievement for a small amateur football club, because it was carried out completely by volunteers.
“The stand was completed for just £5,000. The Football Association couldn’t believe we had done it,” said Paul, who is also a regular supporter and the club’s official historian.

“We decided to ask local businesses and individuals to sponsor seats in the stand and we have sold every one,” he said.

Paul explained that the success of the stand, which has been used for the past two seasons, inspired the club to go on to build another small stand at the ground which has been Saffron Walden’s home since 1890.

The smaller stand, which will have 40 further seats is due for completion by the end of the 2007 season.

John Nicholson, Acrow Galvanizing Ltd’s sales manager, said: “We are contracted to galvanize work for customers across a wide geographical area, but it’s really good to be associated with a project which is right on our own doorstep.

“The links between Acrow and the club go back years and many of our employees have played or keenly supported the team. We’re real Saffron Walden Town FC fans here at Acrow Galvanizing.”
