Scottish Keeps Paddle Steamer Ship-Shape

Scottish Galvanizers Ltd has recently helped to make the beautiful P. S. Waverley even more ship-shape by galvanizing two hatch covers and a vessel lid for the historic craft, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2007.

The Waverley is the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world and will be carrying out an extensive schedule of cruises around the UK during the year, including the Clyde, the West of Scotland, the Bristol Channel and the Thames.

Originally built in the Clyde, in 2003 the vessel was completely refurbished and restored to its 1940s styling with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society.

Weighing 693 tonnes, the P. S. Waverley is capable of carrying up to 800 passengers. Its two giant paddle wheels are 18ft in diameter and it has a 2,100 horsepower engine.
