Land Rovers of all ages and types are being successfully restored and given a completely new lease of life using replacement chassis which have been galvanized by Humber Galvanizing Ltd, part of the Wedge Galvanizing Group.

Humber Galvanizing Ltd, based at Citadel Trading Park, Hull, is fully galvanizing the hollow box-section, steel chassis for its customer Designa Chassis, of Doncaster, which supplies the replacement chassis to Land Rover parts outlets, owners and enthusiasts not only in the UK but countries around the world, including the USA and Taiwan.

Land Rovers were first produced just after the Second World War using aluminium for the bodywork, but the all-important chassis which gives Land Rovers their strength is steel. Now many owners of leaf-sprung and coil-sprung models, are switching their vehicles onto galvanized replacement chassis.

Iain Blenkinsop who runs Designa Chassis, says that one of the advantages of chassis galvanized by Humber is that they are completely immersed in a modern, fully-enclosed galvanizing bath (measuring 5.5m x 1.2m x 2.8m) during the galvanizing process: 'That means our chassis are fully protected on the inside as well as the outside.'

Humber's Tony Linsley says that the company has been successfully working on behalf of Designa Chassis over many years and currently galvanizes around eight complete chassis per month.

'There are many people who want to keep their Land Rovers running and one of the core parts of the business is to convert them from the old leaf-spring suspension onto a new chassis with coil springs and shock absorbers. Even in a very harsh environment, such as the underneath of a Land Rover, the galvanized chassis would be expected to be corrosion-free for up to 20 years.'

Designa Chassis, which supplies all sizes and specifications of chassis for Land Rovers is currently preparing to manufacture chassis for Range Rovers, and Humber Galvanizing Ltd is confident that it is well-placed to galvanize these new chassis to an equally high, quality standard.
