Newport Galvanizers has played a stand-up role in the construction of a gigantic arachnid that forms the focal point for a show that has appeared at some of the UK’s best-known festivals.
The plant has galvanized the feet of a 40 tonne spider sculpture that makes up the main attraction for Bristol-based Arcadia Spectacular’s dynamic and unique shows that incorporate music, pyrotechnics, laser shows, and aerial performances.
The plant was called upon by the firm to galvanise the steel feet of the spider which had previously been left untreated, and as a result the steel had become dirty and was difficult to clean. The spider, which stands at 15 metres tall, includes a 360 degree stage and integrated lighting, and has been constructed from recycled military hardware. Arcadia has established itself as a favourite attraction at festivals including Glastonbury and Boomtown, with the spider captivating audiences and receiving critical acclaim.
Bertie Cole, Director at Arcadia Spectacular, explained: “The structure has evolved over the past five years and has really become somewhat of a focal point at festivals across the UK. Due to its regular use, not only in the UK but internationally in places such as Thailand, it’s vital that the spider looks aesthetically-pleasing, which is why we chose to have the feet galvanized, not only to protect the steel but ensure cleaning is easier too.”
Mike Small, Sales Manager at Newport Galvanizers, said: “We were pleased to support Arcadia Spectacular with the sculpture, and offer a convenient solution to protect the sculpture from the elements. The spider regularly travels across the country, and even internationally too, so galvanizing offers the perfect finish to ensure it remains in good condition.”
