Jim Lindsay raised a glass to special memories as he looked back on no less than 40 years with Edward Howell Galvanizers.
The popular Sales Manager joined the business on April 23, 1979 – when Amii Stewart was number one with ‘Knock On Wood’ and Margaret Thatcher was days from being named Prime Minister.
Now 59, Jim has lost no enthusiasm for his role and is able to reflect on reaching an impressive milestone at the Wednesfield plant with an immense amount of pride.
He said: “I can’t really believe I’ve been here 40 years – the time has just flown by.
“I was only 19 when I joined Howells so the fact that I’m still here now is a special achievement.
“I’ve so many memories of this place, the people I’ve met and the things we’ve done. I think I’ve done almost every job in the place and I’ve been here so long that I’ve worked with four general managers in my time!”
Having left school at 16, he spent time at a hardware store and an armour plating company before joining Edward Howell as a jigger on the shop floor.
Later graduating to become a pickler and then a galvanizer, he first joined the sales department as a junior in 1990 and has been Sales Manager since the mid-90s.
He added: “The actual process of galvanizing has altered little during my career here, but I’ve seen a lot of other changes.
“Health and safety is one aspect that has improved massively and the customer base has changed too – our market is much more diverse than it ever used to be, which is a great thing.”
Modest Jim, who’s married with three children, was typically keen to keep his 40th anniversary low key and settled for a small celebration, featuring little more than cakes and snacks, with his closest colleagues.
But he has allowed himself one treat and is preparing for a well-earned holiday with friends.
Enjoy your break Jim, it’s much deserved!
