Scottish Galvanizers Ltd is delivering the perfect blend to help a multi-national beverage company improve production of Scotch whisky.
Distell, which operates all over the world, is building a string of new facilities at its six-acre manufacturing site in East Kilbride.
And more than 400 tonnes of structural steelwork for the project is being treated at the Scottish Galvanizers plant in nearby Glasgow.
Work to build a 5,000 sq ft warehouse, next door to an existing bottling plant, was completed in August while five other steel-framed buildings, including a state-of-the-art blending centre, are expected to be finished by the start of next year.
Paul Tait, Commercial Manager at Scottish Galvanizers, said: “The new buildings at East Kilbride will help Distell to improve production by consolidating their operation on one site.
“The first phase of the development, which is a big maturation warehouse, features 300 tonnes of steel in itself and the other buildings will take the amount used on the entire project to 420 tonnes.
“Our job is to ensure that structural steel will stand the test of time. Galvanizing will ensure that the steel will be corrosion and maintenance free for at least 70 years.
“We’ve already done a large part of that work, but there’s still more to do as the project won’t be completed until the end of January."
GR Contracts, based in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, was brought in to fabricate the structures by main contractors Muir Construction. And they were quick to call on Scottish Galvanizers for help.
Director Robert Savage explained: “We’ve had a long-term relationship with the plant for quite a number of years, so as soon as galvanizing was specified, we knew exactly where to go.
“The warehouse is finished now, construction of the blending centre started last week and then there’ll be a process building, a tanker station, a gatehouse and a forklift bay – and all of the galvanizing work will be carried out by Scottish Galvanizers.
“We use them quite often for a variety of work, simply because they produce a quality service, they work hard to keep lead times to a minimum and they offer competitive rates.”
