Scottish Galvanizers teamed up with a renowned blacksmith and award-winning creative studio to create a historic monument as part of a new public realm space in Glasgow.
The plant has provided its specialist hot dip galvanizing treatment to the Pollokshaws Compass, a structure designed by Pidgin Perfect, and fabricated by The Blazing Blacksmith as part of the redevelopment of The Shilling Ground, an area of significant historical importance in South West Glasgow.
The compass, which has been commissioned by Glasgow Housing Association with the support of Creative Scotland, is part of the new public space and has been designed to highlight the importance of The Shilling Ground, provide visitors with information about the area’s history, and give directions to other areas of historical interest.
Jim Whitson from the Blazing Blacksmith explained: “We’ve enjoyed a successful working relationship with the team at Scottish Galvanizers for a number of years now, and their service and support with this project in particular has been fantastic. The compass in particular has been especially rewarding to make and we chose to use galvanizing to protect it against weathering and rust because of its permanent footing outside.”
Paul Tait, Customer Service Manager at Scottish Galvanizers, commented: “The compass has recently been unveiled to the public and there’s already been glowing feedback from locals and visitors alike. We’re proud to have played a part in this prestigious project and look forward to working with Jim on many more projects to come.”
