South East Galvanizers has played a key role in the renovation of a popular yacht harbour.
The Witham-based plant was called upon to provide its specialist hot dip galvanizing service to 11 tonnes of steel used to refurbish a series of pontoons moored at Suffolk Yacht Harbour in Levington.
The refurbishment was commissioned as even though the steel frames to the pontoons had withstood the test of time, the timber decking was in desperate need of updating. The project saw South East Galvanizers clean and deblast the original steel, and regalvanize it to ensure protection against the elements, before it was reassembled on-site. The newly completed pontoons have ensured customers can moor their boats when they are not sailing on the nearby River Orwell, or down along the coast.
Neil Pearson, Commercial Manager of South East Galvanizers, said: “The steel frames were originally galvanized around 20 years ago, which is testament to the long-lasting protection the process offers in a marine environment.”
Jonathan Dyke, Managing Director at Suffolk Yacht Harbour, commented: “The regeneration of the pontoons was commissioned as the pontoons required updating and more space was needed for the modern larger yachts. The steel required galvanizing as the marine environment is extremely corrosive. The service South East Galvanizers provided was efficient, and we are safe in the knowledge the galvanizing treatment will last for many years to come.“
