Essex Scout Hall Unveils Robust, Galvanized Fire-Escape Upgrade
A North Essex community group has welcomed an essential upgrade at their building which will enable it to provide vital community services for future generations.
Following a safety inspection which recommended urgent repairs, Saffron Walden District Scouts invested in a brand-new fire escape at its Scout HQ building in Saffron Walden to significantly enhance safety, durability, and longevity, replacing a 50+ year old staircase.
The District Buildings Committee engaged AJB Steel Products to oversee the replacement, with key improvements including the replacement of worn treads, as well as protective side panels to the handrails – both integral to user safety and accessibility.

Given the staircase’s exposure to the elements, AJB recommended galvanizing the new steel components for superior weather resistance and durability – an option they apply when it’s the most reliable and long-term choice.
Kevin Rule, Group Lead Volunteer at 1st Saffron Walden Scout Group, (who use the hall) and who also works as Office Supervisor at a local galvanizing firm, Acrow Galvanizing Ltd (part of Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd), understood the importance of using the protective finish.
“Galvanizing the steel offers a much more effective protection against weathering and corrosion than other alternative finishes like paint or powder-coating, which is why it was very welcoming to hear AJB recommend the finish on our troop’s new staircase. Of course, we were happy to help.”
The District Scouts manage and maintain the High‑Street Scout Hall, a central hub for local youth development and community activities. Ensuring safety and accessibility remains a top priority as they continue to inspire the next generation of young people – from Squirrels and Beavers, to Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts.
Geoff Chapman of Saffron Walden District Scouts, added: “Both myself and our District Secretary Peter Wright worked closely with AJB Steel Products and Acrow Galvanizing throughout the process to ensure the work met both our recommended safety and Scouting requirements. We’re delighted to be fit for the future, and to continue providing activities and camps for hundreds of young people across our local area.”
