Osprey Sculptures Soar in Hertford with Support from South East Galvanizers

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony in Hertford late last year marked the unveiling of an Osprey series at Blakemore Manor, coinciding with the opening of the new residential development.

The event, attended by the Mayor of Hertford, Cllr Carter, celebrated a project several years in the making and highlighted the importance of public art in creating identity, enriching communities, and delivering memorable experiences.

Commissioned by Croudace Homes, the Osprey sculpture trail was designed and fabricated by Charles Elliott Sculpture to guide residents through the landscape in stages. From the first nest holding bronze eggs, to the chick preparing for flight, and finally to the Osprey soaring at full wingspan, the sculptures reflect the life cycle of the bird and its symbolic connection to freedom, resilience, and nature.

Each piece was meticulously hand-designed and shaped by Charles Elliott Sculpture at their studio, using 8mm steel bar. Every curve and line was individually hand-bent to capture movement and fluidity in metal.

To ensure the sculptures are built to last, they were then hot dip galvanized by South East Galvanizers, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd, which protects the artworks against the elements and provides a striking silvery appearance.

“My usual pieces travel worldwide, so to be asked to work on a project so close to home has been really meaningful,” said Charles, founder of Charles Elliott Sculpture. “These Ospreys aren’t just sculptures, they’re a journey for the community, designed to be discovered, visited, and enjoyed by the local community for generations.”

The project spanned almost four years from concept to completion, with Elliott of London collaborating closely with Croudace Homes, landscape architect Sam Brittain, Hertfordshire County Council, and local planning teams.

Every aspect, from design and planning to fabrication and installation, was carefully managed to ensure the artworks complemented their surroundings and adhered to all environmental and structural considerations.

Neil Pearson, Commercial Manager at South East Galvanizers, added: “We’re thrilled to support Charles Elliott Sculpture in protecting these stunning sculptures. Hot-dip galvanizing ensures the steel maintains its strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal for decades, allowing the community to enjoy these artworks for generations to come.”

The Osprey sculptures are now a permanent feature of Blakemore Manor, offering residents and visitors a trail of engaging public art.
